Why Your Photos Are Worth More Than You Think (and Why This Summer Is the Time to Book)

There's a photo on my wall that I'd run back into a burning building for. It's not technically perfect. The lighting isn't what I'd choose today. But it holds a moment I can never get back — and that's the whole point.

Photo: Me (Sierra) just born with my Grandma Mary who is no longer with us.
My mom taught me that. She always believed photos were how we hold onto the moments that go by too fast to fully catch in real time. That belief is the entire reason I picked up a camera, and it's still the heart of everything I do at Joyfully Rooted today.
So as we head into summer here in Jackson, Michigan, I want to talk about something I think we all need the reminder for: your photos matter more than you think — and the time to capture this season is now.
The moment you're in right now won't come back
Here's the thing nobody tells you. We always think there will be time later. We'll book the family session once the kids are a little older. We'll do senior photos closer to graduation. We'll finally get those branding photos once the business is "ready."
But the version of your life happening right now — the ages your kids are today, the season your business is in, the way your family looks gathered together this summer — that exact moment has an expiration date. A photograph is the only thing that lets you hold onto it.
That's not meant to stress you out. it's meant to free you. You don't have to wait for the perfect moment. The moment you're living right now is already worth remembering.
What I photograph
Joyfully Rooted offers four main types of sessions, each built around capturing the moments that matter most to you:
Family & lifestyle sessions — The everyday magic. The way your kids actually are right now, the connection in your family this season, the moments you'll want to look back on in ten years.
Senior portraits — A milestone that deserves to be marked. Photos that capture who your graduate is on the edge of everything that comes next.
Branding & headshots — For the entreprenerus, creatives, and small-business owners building something. Images that help people see and connect with the real you behind the work.
Engagements & weddings — The biggest day, captured with intention and heart, so you can relive it long after the cake is gone.
A few questions I hear all the time
How far in advance should I book? Sooner than you'd think, especially for summer and fall. My weekends fill up fastet, but I usually have weeknight availability open — and honestly, those golden-hour evening sessions right before sunset produce some of my favorite light all year.
What should we wear? Don't overthink it. Coordinating tones (not matching outfits) and clothes you actually feel like yourself in will always photograph better than something stiff and brand-new. Once you book, I can send guidance to make it easy.
When do I get my photos back? You'll receive a beatifully edited gallery you can download, share, and print. Editing is where I pour the most love into your images — it's how your gallery becomes timeless instead of just snapshots.
What if I'm awkward in front of the camera? You're in good company — amost everyone says this! My job is to make the session feel easy and natural, so you walk away with photos that feel like you, not posed and stiff.
Booking summer & beyond
If there's a moment in your life worth holding onto — and there always is — this is your sign to finally book it. My calendar is filling up for the season, with weekends going fast and some lovely weeknight spots still open for the month of June.
I'd be honored to capture this chapter for you.
